About Dr Emily McGeown
Emily is a counselling psychologist registered with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). She has 19 years experience working with children, adolescents and adults. Early experience included NHS mental health services (community mental health team, adult psychological therapies service, CAMHS and specialist eating disorder services) and the charity sector.
Emily has worked in independent practice since 2007 and until recently worked as a senior psychologist in a CAMHS eating disorders team where she led the development of an ARFID pathway within the service.
Emily has been part of a complex eating disorders working group, contributing to chapters relating to both autism and ARFID. She has delivered a number of ARFID training sessions to professionals in health and education and has worked as a senior lecturer on a counselling psychology doctorate. In addition to her work as a counselling psychologist, Emily volunteers as a coach for a cancer post-treatment support group.
Emily is experienced in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) but works integratively, drawing on a range of evidence-based psychological therapies, including acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion focused therapy, EMDR and dialectical behaviour therapy.
The humanistic approach underpins Emily’s work – valuing the individual and their subjective experience. Emily takes a
collaborative approach, ensuring that interventions are informed by a formulation (making sense of how difficulties develop and are maintained, emphasising strengths and needs), as well as clients’ therapy goals and NICE guidelines/the evidence base for psychological interventions.
